Tech MSW

Tech MSW is a commonly used shorthand reference to technology in Municipal Solid Waste.

Tech MSW Waste Technology for Municipal Solid Waste UK

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is the household waste and any other wastes collected by the Waste Collection Authority, or its agents, such as municipal parks and gardens waste, beach cleansing waste, commercial or industrial waste, and waste resulting from the clearance of fly-tipped materials.

The Waste Collection Authority (WCA) is the District Council (in two tier areas) or Metropolitan/ Unitary Authority with responsibility for waste collection from each household in its area. WCAs also have a duty to prepare and publicise waste recycling plans and strategies.

The rules under which tech MSW is to be implemented dictate in the UK and throughout Europe, due to the Landfill Directive and other EU Directives, the order (or hierarchy) under which a suitable tech MSW solution must be selected by the WCA for MSW. The hierarchy for tech MSW technology choices is known as the Waste Hierarchy

Waste Hierarchy - This is a concept which is important to all tech MSW as it suggests that:

  • the most effective environmental option may often be to reduce the amount of waste generated (reduction);
  • where further reduction is not practicable, products and materials can sometimes be used again, either for the same or a different purpose (reuse);
  • failing that value should be recovered through waste (through recycling, composting or energy recovery from waste); only if none of the above offer an appropriate solution should waste be disposed of.

Over and above the hierarchy but hopefully supported by the waste hierarchy is the principle of Sustainable Development.

Development which is sustainable is defined as that which can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Use the links displayed on the menus on this page to find out more about tech MSW, as tech MSW is explained throughout the site.

The main tech MSW activities for which tech MSW technologies are advancing in the UK are:

1.Sorting of Recyclables
2.Bring Sites and Civic Amenity (CA) Site Collection Options
3.Kerbside Collection Options
4.Markets for Recyclables Mechanical Sorting and Processing
5.Sorting and Processing Mixed MSW
6.Sorting and Processing Co-mingled Recyclables Biological Treatment
7.Composting
8.Methods of Collecting Wastes Suitable for Composting
9.Composting Techniques and Technologies
10.Compost Markets
11.Anaerobic Digestion
12.Collection Methods for Anaerobic Digestion Operations
13.Outputs from the Process Mechanical Biological Treatment Energy from Waste
14.Moving Grate Incineration (EfW) Plants
15.Fluidised Bed Technology (EfW) Plants
16.Other Kilns Advanced Thermal Treatment
17.Gasification
18.Pyrolysis
19.Other Waste Management Alternatives
20.Mechanical Heat Treatment
21.Autoclaving
22.Gas Plasma
23.Alternative Treatment Technologies

Tech MSW should find information within this web site to answer most questions on the above topics.
