Mechanical Separation and Pulverisation
In many waste processes, and generally after re-use or recycling and any hand-picking, the residual waste is separated mechanically, and the material is often also pulverised with mechanical separation before or after, according to process requirements.
Separation can be achieved by density and size in a trommel screen, and/or by an air cyclone.
In some processes water may be added and flotation and other wet separation applied.
In recent years air separators which knock specific materials out of the waste stream as it passes have also become popular.

The Ball Mill is a pulverisation system originally developed for the mining industry, but now also used in the waste processing industry.
The Macerator is another machine used for pulverising or breaking up the residual waste materials for further processing.
